To accomplish the task, the church has used many different tools in the telling of the story. Throughout history God’s people have taken the common elements of daily life and used them as a resource for the telling of the story of God’s grace. The same is true for the 21st Century, and the tools include elements of both the physical and virtual world. The biblical text consistently tells us that God is present in all of life, and for us that includes the virtual world. It does not mean that everything that happens there is of God, but rather that God can work in that world just as surely as the physical world. Today’s technology offers the church a new avenue for communication of the good news. From websites, to social networking, to cell phones, technology offers humanity ways of communicating with one another and sharing the gospel around the world. There is our challenge today, to find ways of using the available technologies to reach out to people with the message of the gospel. To do so, the gospel has to be presented in ways that are comprehensible to those who hear or read it. The gospel message does not change, but the ways in which it is communicated must change to be relevant and understood by people. We have the capability of quickly sharing the gospel message on a global scale. The church has to learn from the past to be able to respond to the present and future technological opportunities of the sharing of the gospel. My new book Telling the Story: The Gospel in a Technological Age, offers insights into how the church has shared the gospel and then explores ways of sharing the gospel using the technological tools at the church’s disposal. The story of the gospel has been told for centuries, and it has influenced and impacted people’s lives from the very beginning. The gospel is God’s story of God’s incarnation into human history so that a relationship between God and humanity could be re-forged. The gospel goes where people are and touches us in the midst of our lives. Sometimes God’s presence catches us by surprise, and at other times it comes just when it is needed. In all of life God is present. One of the questions for the church is how to communicate the presence and grace of God such that people can hear and understand it.
